news story posted at HispanicBusiness.com recently announced that Amazon.com plans to hire hundreds of seasonal employees to staff a new Jeffersonville distribution center, in the Louisville, Kentucky metro area. They plan to fill “day and night full-time, part-time and weekend opportunities.”

Regardless of their hiring classification or position, smart employers know the importance of conducting thorough background checks on anyone they hire – that includes temporary, seasonal, part-time, and full-time employees.

Historically, employers haven’t always taken the time to conduct thorough background checks on seasonal or temporary hires believing that it wasn’t worth the cost or didn’t matter because of their short work duration. However, anyone you hire, regardless of status, may cause damage, financial loss, or injure your company reputation and brand resulting in long-term negative effects that may outlast the length of time the employee works for you.

Taking the appropriate action is even more important as retailers begin to stock their shelves in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season. In fact, according to a nationwide CareerBuilder survey discussed in an articleposted in the Sacramento Bee, 36% of retailers plan to hire extra people this season. That’s up from 29% in 2011.

Five cities with the largest economies and plans to hire include:

  • Los Angeles – 22% of employers plan to hire season help, 40% plan to transition them to full-time positions
  • New York – 16% of employers plan to hire season help, 35% plan to transition them to full-time positions
  • Atlanta – 15% of employers plan to hire season help, 31% plan to transition them to full-time positions
  • Philadelphia – 14% of employers plan to hire season help, 36% plan to transition them to full-time positions
  • Chicago – 13% of employers plan to hire season help, 31% plan to transition them to full-time positions

Running a background check on every person who works for your organization, regardless of employment status, is an efficient and cost-effective way to reduce your legal exposure.
