Don’t Overlook Executives When Conducting Background Checks

Just because someone has reached the C-suite in an organization, doesn’t mean his or her background is above reproach. In fact, look at any given news cycle and you’re likely to find a story about some highly paid executive who committed a crime, neglected to reveal relevant information about their background such as an undisclosed corporate affiliation, or even stretched the truth a bit on their resume.

According to a Businessweek post, approximately 16% of executive resumes contain false academic claims and/or material omissions relating to educational experience. Based on the 2012 Huffington Post story, “Ex-Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson and Seven Other Cases of Resume Fraud,” it’s clear that things haven’t improved much since the 2007 Businessweek article first appeared.

When it comes to conducting background checks, it’s important to include everyone in the process – even those at the executive level. As we mentioned in our prior blog, “Don’t Make These Three Mistakes When Conducting Background Checks,” hiring a new member to your management team from a headhunter doesn’t guarantee that all the i’s have been dotted and t’s have been crossed.

It is the employer’s responsibility to conduct background checks on new hires regardless of the source of the candidate. Don’t depend on an executive search firm to do the background check for you unless you have a specific process outlined and written into the contract.

Instead, ensure the integrity and consistency of your staffing program by developing an internal policy and process for conducting pre-employment screenings.
