An increase in consumer spending is helping the national unemployment rate continue its downward trend.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor said job growth was widespread in the private sector in January, with large employment gains in professional and business services, leisure and hospitality, and manufacturing.

That’s primarily because more couples are dining out, more vehicles are being driven off dealership lots and more gifts are being purchased for special occasions. Demand is becoming greater to assemble a workforce that can handle the jump in customer traffic.

As companies begin to hire again, a flood of resumes is expected to overwhelm human resources departments. The need for qualified background screening will gain importance. Processing a high volume of resumes is a job best left to the professionals.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine whether a prospective employee fits in well, but the real question is: can he or she satisfy the requirements of the job? A personal history report – covering everything from educational background to job experience to certifications to criminal history – lets decision-makers know whether the job candidate is even worth interviewing. Why waste time with those who don’t meet the company’s standards for the position from the get-go?

There are background-check firms that, if needed, will send an employee to a courthouse to verify public records on a job seeker. They will do the homework, and so should you when searching for a company that can handle history reports. Not only will it ensure a quality addition to the team, it will help avoid any embarrassing moves by an unqualified worker who slips through the cracks.

Who’s at fault when your employee ends up on the evening news? Don’t let failures in the background check process sink your company with lawsuits and public humiliation.

There are scores of highly trained workers looking to get back where they were before widespread layoffs cost them their job. It simply comes down to recognizing those lucky finds when they knock on the door.
