Using Background Checks to Hire Candidates with Integrity

When you hire someone, you give them access to your company premises and your computer system. Thus, you need to make sure that you do a background check first to hire someone with integrity. There are many ways in which a person whom you hire might misuse your company resources. They might take home things that belong in the office or use company data for their own purposes. They might even end up selling company secrets to your competitors or accept commissions on purchases.

Small and Big Employee Transgressions

Some of the above-mentioned transgressions are small and insignificant while others are big and might seriously damage your company. It’s not going to make a difference to you if one of your employees takes home a box of computer paper or a few pens. However, it will make a difference if they convince you to make your big purchases from a place that’s giving them 5% commission!

Looking Into the Candidate’s Past Behavior

By doing a background check, you can find out whether they are likely to do wrong. If they have a legal record for embezzling funds, for example, then that’s a clear sign that you should steer clear of them. But even if they have been suspected of something similar, you might want to think twice before hiring someone without integrity. Further, you can find out if there has been any suspicious behavior in their past by doing a background check.

Collecting Information About a Candidate

Your background check provider will call all the places where that person has worked, and if they’ve left out certain places for strategic reasons, they can find out about those places too. A simple phone call to that person’s supervisor at these workplaces will give you the information you need. If someone was let go because they were suspected of unethical practices that could not be proved, then it’s up to you to decide whether you want to hire them or not. Either way, keep in mind that knowledge is power and will enable you to make the best possible decision.
